Well, here's a surprise,Dave's building a boat model!! The 'instruction booklet' for this has been in my bedside cabinet for yonks and I kept 'looking' at it,so, I decided to find the kit and make a start on it,and this I did! I spent about 2 hours on it last night and finished off the 'skeleton', simple straight forward stuff and next (according to the instructions) is the first layer of planking, the instructions give you a start and I think you make it up as you go,one page shows 'the start'..next page it's finished, methinks I'll figure it out!..."Hmmmmm? "..........No photo at this stage,no point really as we all no what a frame looks like, when it's planked I will...........the railway??, no, it's not got the 'by', just thought I'd do some small project on my coffee table as it's tidy, but I'm th th 'thinking' railway!!......Dave

I've been thinking of getting this kit, maybe one day. Instructions sound like typical Artesania Latina ones.

I think that they (AL) must 'assume' that everybody knows how to plank a hull Anthony...I wouldn't have a Scooby Doo Anthony, I'll try and source more info on line, there has to be something out there on the

Well, I couldn't find anything to help me,so I started from the top 0f the frame/ rib cage to get the first lot of strakes to form the starting point and forming the basic shape of the boat, I then just worked my way down the hull both sides slowly doing them equally and letting the planks form their curves/shape , then trim 'in' fit! Once I got so far down the hull, I then worked from the keel up and finished it off that way with two 'thin pointed planks' that were almost identical to complete the project, so it worked out really well. I finished it off by the usual sanding and it all and it looks OK, no real filling to do, a couple of wee bits up at the bow end as it still has to be half decent because these planks are seen on the inside of the boat! (I seem to have a problem with the 'starboard' side when planking, don't ask!!) This first lot (as per the usual) form the base for the second lot and thankfully these are way thin and easy to form, still trying mind you, might still use a bit of water to ease the bending process as they are very bent as they curve upward to form the bow shape. So, I've been busy, more or less all day yesterday, I'm onto the second lot and I'll follow the same plan as mentioned . 'The plan' it's going OK (at the moment!),but it's very time consuming, and for such a small kit, two full tubes of superglue so far, and of course, white glue is being used as well......(for those thingking, surely not!!), anyhoo, a photo or two will follow soon......Dave

Your going very well by the sound of it. Once I have the $4,500.00 or so paid off, then I think I'll hunt this one down and build it. Pity it's not the same scale as the HMB Endeavour.

It would be a wee bit on the small side Anthony, you get a miniature one to build with the kit anyway..yes??.... I forgot to mention that during the build of the first lot of planking, I did not use a single one of the brass pins supplied. What I did was to 'superglue' each plank into the bow first, then, when secure a few seconds later, I'd drill through said plank (just shy of the pointy bit)and then into a 'bulkhead' Next step, a 'superglue' tipped 'toofpick' was inserted into this 'hole' with a pair of flat nose pliers, twisted a wee bit, held in place for a couple of seconds then trimmed off. I'd then proceed to glue the rest of the plank in place and where the plank contacts a 'bulkhead' it is 'toofpicked', this was done with every plank. By doing it this way there are no pin heads to file off,or pins to remove, the protruding 'toofpick' is simply snipped and a bit of sandpaper or a file has it all flush in a second or two,the 'toofpick' therefor remains in place to ensure that no plank is gonna 'pop!!' With this method it usually doesn't matter with any 'toofpick ' that protrudes into the inside of the hull, but with a kit like this the inside is there for all to see,so when I was drilling through the plank and bulkhead I kept a 'sensitive finger' on the back of the bulkhead and just as I felt the drill 'tip', I knew when to stop!, any 'toofpick' protruding through is simply snipped off, and in the case of this model with the 'bulkhead' black,a simple 'touch up' with a black felt tip pen did the job of making it go away!..Dave

Progress on this little model has been 'steady'....(ish) I've now completed my favourite job..planking!, well, the hull is complete, but there is still some 'easy' planking to do on the inside of the boat before I start to cut' trim' shape' drill then assemble all the wee niggly bits and bobs that make up 'stuff' that make a boat work, even a wee boat like this has all sorts of gear, and as I look at the instructions, well illustrated they might be,but I think I might struggle a wee bit trying to figure things out, but I'm sure I'll get there once I have the parts in me hand....I hope!! Thar be a wee bit painting to do,(aaarrr) so I painted a 'top' part (don't know what it's called),the instructions give the colour as 'bitchy-men' (now there's a colour!!) and a white glue mix, I used 'matt black' applied with a cotton bud..no gue, but looks OK. Thar be (aaarrrr) two 2mm X 2mm strakes that goes round the hull between the light wood and dark wood (it's a striking strake??) port and starboard that required a 'fer' bit of soaking to bend it round the bow,it also had to be painted, a mix of the above, but it'll be matt black (like the other bit!) I thought it would be wise to paint after bending and fixing to the hull but I'll need a pretty good brush and a steady hand to paint this, I don't want any stray paint on the nice light woods, I might have a steady (ish) hand, a good brush I do not have! Anyhoo,I solved that problem with a small black marker, with a bit of gentle pressure I simple run the felt tip almost right up to the side right along the strakes length in one simple action...well, that's 3 actions really, top, edge, underside!.... easy and perfecto in no time at all!!....Photo to follow shortly...........Dave

Sounds like your progressing well with it.......strange mix for the paint, with glue.......
I've noticed that Trumpeter are doing a 1/350 USS Indiannapolis HC...I've ordered mine already.......Phil

Yip, I is Phil, I finked the mix was a strange one, mind you, I think it would work, I'm happy with the 'matt black' effect....... On the Indiana Polis,do you get the white tipped reef sharks included with the kit?

Out of a crew of 1,160 around 900 men survived the attack by the Jap sub and went into the water. 579 of those men died while in the water, many of them eaten/taken by sharks...a survivor (a ships doctor), said he only saw 56 corpes taken out of the water that showed signs of being eaten/mauled by sharks , he reckoned the sharks were quite happy concentrating on eating the dead, but I 'm sure the sharks would have got a few live ones as well........316 were picked out of the water to survive the horrid ordeal.....It makes you wonder how the war would have gone if she (the Indianapolis) had got sunk before it had delivered the bomb??....Dave

It would only have delayed the event, they had a second bomb ready to go, it got used on Nagasaki.........Phil
