My first post on here. I am building the Endeavour part work. I have built a model of the Endeavour previously (about 20 years ago) from an Artesania Latina kit. Most of that construction was done using just the kit instructions, and there are a lot of incorrect details. I can post photos if anyone wants to see, or you can look on the Facebook page called Build the Endeavour that Anthony started. Anyway with this model I want to make it look as close to what the Endeavour really looked like, I will use the part works as a base and scratch build where necessary. I have a copy of the original 1768 draught, AOTS, and Ray Parkin's book "HM Bark Endeavour" as references. First up, the model is 1:51 scale not 1:48 Here is my model, the major changes here are that I have curved the decks, and modified the bulwarks to the correct height and curvature. The line of the bulwarks is very important to the overall lines of the ship and hence its general appearance. Attachments:

Welcome aboard Shipaholic and looking forward to another build of the Endeavour. Have a K for starting a build diary here.

I'm not using the gun carriages supplied, they are too tall and the wrong shape. If you look at the cannons in the photos in the magazine they are made of wood, yet we were supplied these useless metal ones. I suppose you need the taller metal ones if you make the waist bulwarks as instructed, but I have made my bulwarks to match the original draught plan. I made these carriages out of walnut left over from two kits I had previously built, the wheels are cut from 5mm and 6mm dowel and the axles made from toothpicks stained with walnut stain. A bit fiddly, but you get used to doing fiddly stuff when you build ships. I will also make my own anchors, the ones supplied are way too small, I made the anchors from scratch on my last two ships so I've had some experience. One thing that puzzled me was that in Ray Parkin's book he says the barrels are 6 feet long, in that case the barrels supplied are correct at 36mm. But in AOTS if you scale the drawings they work out to be just over 5 feet long. I looked up 18th century cannon dimensions on the net and found a page that had a table for the standard dimensions of naval guns and a 4 pounder was 6 feet in length. Attachments:

A note on scale. This model is NOT 1:48 1:48 is the same as 1/4 inch equals 1 foot. I enlarged my copy of the original draught so it matches exactly with the dimensions of the hull. The draught has a scale where each division is one foot, as you can see in the photo each division is not 1/4 inch. The actual scale of this model is 1:51 Its an important point if, like me, you intend to use the AOTS as a reference. A little bit of extra mathematics will be involved when enlarging drawings. The Artesania Latina 1:60 Endeavour I built. Started it about 20 years ago, took me about 3 years, then I did a few mods here and there over the years, like make new side badge windows and anchors. Attachments:

Another photo showing the completed carriage, another almost finished and the one supplied in the part work. My guess is that these higher carriages supplied were readily available, so they went with them, and they are probably the reason why the main deck bulwarks are higher on the model that they should be, dunno. A word of advice, don't make scale cannons like mine unless you also modify the bulwarks, otherwise they wont be high enough for the barrels to clear the bulwark. Attachments:

The main hatchway is probably the only place you will be able to see much of the lower deck so I built the hatch above the hold with a grating. I still had some grating left over from my previous Endeavour. Lucky I'm a hoarder Attachments:

The photo below shows how much I removed from the main deck bulwark pieces. As you can see the bulwark now lines up with the original draught. Attachments:

I made one of the anchors today. Some 3mm brass rod and brass flat plate, there's a hobby shop here in Warrnambool that sells brass for modelling, bonus lots of filing then soldered the pieces together and cleaned it up with more filing. I used Ray Parkin's book as reference, by chance the drawing in it is exactly the right scale. You can see the difference in size between the anchor shaft supplied in the part work and the size they should be. Most kits have anchors that are too small, I had to make my own anchors for the last two models i built Attachments:

hi Bob
The anchor stock (wooden bit) is 82mm long 8mm square at the centre tapering to 4mm square at the ends. The taper starts 10mm from the centre.
The hoops are made out of copper wire hammered flat.
The anchor shaft is 77mm long.
The ring is 11mm diameter, i made it out of thick copper wire
Cheers Shipaholic (Steve)
