I sat down last night Phil and took stock of what I have in the way of the pulley wheels and stuff with a view to completing at least one of the booms. I had one complete 'hook line and sinker' you might say to attach to the tip of the jib,it was a tight fit, thought I'd file a wee bit more off the tip, carefully got hold of the part with the plier thingies to give it a wee pull, and off it 'pyonged' to join another lost lamented part..."noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!" oh to be a fly on the wall, I didn't realise I new so many bad words..this is a disaster, total and absolute,I needed to loose this part like I need a hole in the head!!! I had a desperate search, down on the hands and knees, searching the hairy monster of a carpet and thinking, strewth, I should get the 'hoover' out, there's all sorts of crap in this crappy shaggy thing....'sigh'...gave up...no hope...no luck..."oh ****" So I got another cup of coffee and wondered why I bothered, this things jinxed, where's the 'Endeavour!!'....but I had to do something....was this beyond a 'scratch build??',tiny it may be, but it has 4 parts that make it up, I have no spares, nothing,so it's a 'scratch build!', and for the next 3 hours plus VAT, I sat with bits of plastic off the old aft aircraft catapult, brass tubing and stretched sprue, I managed to put something together that actually resembles a bought one!!,moral of story,"Never say Never"..tell you what though..."**** dem pliers!!!"

Just lost it Phil, just lost it!!.......I did a wee bit last night,I'm quite determined you know, it's the challenge, can't let it beat me,but before I did anything, I had another look for the hook thingy.... "ah canny fun it"(Scot)....face it mate...it's gone forever.."oh sigh"..... Anyhoo, let's get at least one boom done tonight..."Awe naw!!" "ah dinny believe it"..there are 4 hooks with blocks (that's not 4 hookers with blokes!!) the one at the tip of the boom is actually smaller than the other, I made a big one...I forgot about that!!!.."bugger bugger bugger!!!" Solution, I got one of the 'big yins' and filed it down a bit, that did the job!! Each of these 'blocks' has a small pulley wheel inserted 'inside' it, it's a very good bit of plastic injection moulding.(it's also got the hook as well!!) To put you in ze picture, the block is moulded like two pieces joined together with a 'slot' to allow for the pulley wheel to fit 'inside', but before you put the wheel in place, you remove the 'brass cable etch' from the fret, it's a long 'loop', the thinnest part of this goes round the pulley that goes into the 'block' and the wider part of the cable goes round another (the topmost) 'pulley wheel'. You make two of these per boom, 'wee yin, big yin', with the smaller of the two at the tip of the jib..capeesh??? It's a fidly job,but it works, looks very good as well. Unfortunately, I'm down on the pulley wheels, even if you can get them off their original plastic 'mounts' they are near impossible to clean up because they are so small! So I came up with an idea, I tried the 'chopping sprues into slices?....that didn't work!..So, I just got a bit of 'scrap' thin 'Plasticard' ,trimmed a small strip that would go into the 'slot in the block', glued it in, snipped off the bit that's left sticking out the top 'roughly to size', I then filed it round, and as the bottom 'half' of the 'wheel' is not seen, this does fine!(there is also one of these in the centre of the jib done in the same way!) I then drill a hole through it's centre, stick a bit of stretched sprue through that and trim it flush with the block, this finishes it off 'cosmetically'........ just looks like a bought one, another problem solved!!........ Lastly, I then tried to remove another bit of 'plastic detail' that is omitted from the brass jib, I think it's a 'guide' for the cable, it's just a tube that's fitted to the end of the jib and the cable goes through it, just used a bit of brass tubing fitted to the edge of a bit of 'Plasticard' trimmed to sit at an 'angle', bobs yer uncle!!.........Dave

I know your determined, and she is a challenge, but as you continue to demonstrate, these challenges are being overcome constantly with "Percy" and skill, with a dash of ingenuity........
Lastly......I don't have an uncle bob.....and what are you doing in amongst wifey's cosmetics........Phil

As long as I stay away from the dresses Phil!!.....Anyhoo, I think working on the Arizona and the likes is the only time my brain works!! I worked on the other boom last night, I didn't loose anything, so I didn't have to come up with anything.. .'Ingenious??'...""Me??""'... I don't really think so, I'm not one of those 'geenyarses', I'm more of a 'borg'..I go for 'adaption!!' "adapt you wee mother '*******' (OOOO!!) piece of '****' (OOOO!!)...that sounds about right, that's me!! I struggled last night, definately the hardest bit yet, only because of the 'after thought', if I hadn't built these booms up 'as per the kit', affixing the 'new' brass detail would have been plain sailink and stwaight forward! Anyhoo, I'm nearly there, I did the last pair of hooks and blocks, I fitted one railing, 5 more railing parts to go and a couple of long ladders 'up the poles' and that's the last of the brass for these. Lastly, I'll get the cables on (stretched sprue) and finally paint it, it should look pretty OK then......as it did before, straight out of the box.....but with just a tad more detail and hours and hours of extra fun!.....Dave

Ok, I've added more railings to the port 'boom' Phil & Co, (thought I'd better do something!) so one is 'almost' finished. I had 3 lots of handrails to fit as per the 'plan sheet' and one 'longish' ladder. A couple of lengths of 'stretched sprue' did for the jib and stay cables ,nothing exact for these as I don't know how they are 'rigged' up, but it'll do for me! (for the now???) To say that it's 'really' finished,(apart from painting) I know that there is one more small piece of railing that fits onto each of the 'tubes',(on a jutty out bit!!) but I'll need to view some model photos today and see what I need for the job. There is nothing on the 'new fret' or the plan , 'so it'll be a 'spare' bit of rail cut off the "Trumpeter' etch that I'll 'adapt' to do this small job.........and by the by, it's a 10/10 rating for this part!, I'm actually quite pleased with myself that I overcame the 'wee problems' that cropped up with the 'rebuild' of these parts..........Dave

I can forgive and forget Phil, "annobearagrudge" I found the model (photos)that I was after to see how the builder had done his and so noted, he also had two more ladders fitted to the top half of the 'tube'. It also came to my attention that the pair of rails that are fitted to the top and bottom part of the jib (not the 'stay) could possibly be on the wrong way round?? This builder had his fitted to the inside edges of the booms, therefor facing inward, where on the other hand, I had mine fitted 'seaward'..facing out the way, both being glued to the outside edge of each jib part..I am now confused...... what is correct? So, I gets back on line brousing through 'actual' photos of the ship searching for an answer, unfortunately, I couldn't find one that conclusively put the railings on the outside edge nor on the inside edge of the boom. I then I thought of the 'Fine Art' model, it uses the 'Stillwell' book and other reliable sources as references. On that model it shows the railings fitted positively to the outside edges of the boom facing 'seaward' as well, so I thought (Hmn??), maybe on a model costing 9 grand US, could this be correct???.... I'll just go that way then!!....thank goodness!, mine are already fitted securely in place with 'Shooper Gwoo' simply because I never doubted their fitment in the first place...but when you are faced with another beaut model that is different?, well, you just got to go through the above, just to be sure.....or am I??, this after all is the Arizona my friend (s)and I still have not come accross two models that are the same!!!!.........Dave.
