I’ve seen DCC in railway magazines and some people on here have spoken about it. What do I need in order to run a DCC system? I know I need a DCC controller and trains with a DCC pin slot or space for a wired in one. But what else do I need? I just don’t want to get to the end and have to make loads a changes to by railway.

Basically the DCC controller and it's transformer, then the decoder that goes in the locomotive are the main parts. More here www.hornby.com/digital/dcc-faq,171,HAR.html BTW you don't have to modify your points as it says in the FAQ, (that was started by the yanks, that can't set things up properly).

For my N gauge project, I was originally going to use my Roco Multimaus DCC system I have on my HOe layout. This was going to cause some problems(keep disconnecting this, as the HOe layout is in the loft), so I decided to get a separate system. I got the Bachmann Dynamis system, which I think is a good system. I fitted the decoders into my class 156 dmu, and also fitted light bars in them. Programming was very easy. Andy, if you are going DCC with your N gauge layout, you will have to check which loco`s can be fitted with a decoder. I am becoming quite a dab hand at DCC now. Martin

Hello Andy, you into BR stuff as well?,saw you got 'Tornado, 'beaut loco'. I have it myself, saw it in a shop in Carlisle (England) and had to have it. It's not exactly 'my era', but I'll use it on 'Specials' pulling a few Pullmans, wont look out of place in a 60s layout!! (that's if I ever have one, 200 locos, or so, and nowhere to run them!!) Digital??, thought about it for a daft moment and purchased 3 different units off EBay, a Roco, Backman EZ and I think a F'man. I gave the EZ a go, got one chip and placed it into a B'mann CL25, it went and that was it, now the 25 doesn't work on normal (bugger)and the 3 units are 'around' somewhere! collecting dust! Anyway, going DCC is a choice that you'll have to make, those that have it...love it..and I'm not dumb enough not to see the advantages, but with soooooooo many locos, I'm personally giving it the by...3 DC units going cheap!!.......Dave

hi Dave, I don’t mind BR locos however I prefer locos in the original colours such as LNER, LMS colours and great western trains. I have a few BR trains 08 class DCC with sound dark green livery. I just don’t like the black livery I find it plain.
My 00 gauge 2ft by 4ft DCC layout is going well. All the points work by switchpilot, though 2 springs have broke in the points and I need to replace them. All my locos which are 00 gauge are DCC ready or have then fitted. However I think the n-gauge layout will for some time remain analogue I have too many trains which are non DCC in fact all of them are non DCC.

Hello Andy, I like all the pre grouping colors as well, but I grew up with BR, strainspotting from around 1959 (10 YO) and right through my teenage years,so my locos were green, black, maroon. I personally like black by the way, especially the lined black. I still carried on 'spotting' through the demise of steam developing a sort of 'love' for the diesel loco, but the corporate 'all over blue' livery spelt the end for me, my collection reflects this with only green locos present! Anyway Andy, it's all a personal choice, our 'love' for the hobby remains the same, that's what counts! On DCC, I was going to build a rather large 15'X15' (feet) layout with a part of it being DCC, hence the sudden rush to buy DCC units for 'trial' That's why I have a Roco (twin Mause) a Marklin, and a Backmann E-Z up for sale, or exchange. To me it was too much bother, I'm old fashioned in my ways and terrible with electronics, mind, you I eventually get it to work, my layout that I had back in Scotland was a testiment to that, a 15' x 10' loft layout..broke my heart to break it up to come here and through 26 years I've never had another, yet my loco collection has just grew and grew....Dave

Hi Andy, I think it's personal choice in the end, so many people have differing views on the subject, that in the end it becomes more confusing than ever. The same can be said for the various DCC equipment out there, what do you buy if you wanted to go that way. I asked a certain chap from a Sydney hobby store last year about DCC, he was more interested in selling me a setup than answering my questions, so as a result, I'm still DC.....Phil

Started with my DCC HOe layout again. I have given up with the N gauge layout. I now have some N gauge stuff for sale now. Martin

Look forward to seeing the HOe layout. Are you going to use the N scale one as the basis for it, or start again?
I have some HOe wagons to build sometime.

I am just going to start again. Hopefully build a layout based on the Zillertalbahn Narrow gauge in Austria. Martin
