This project uses two of those horrible little Hornby 4-wheel coaches to make a more authentic-looking 6-wheeled coach. A pair were picked up cheaply on an auction website and after dismantling were cut with a razor saw down the line of a door on one piece and down the line of the doorframe on the other. The pair of chassis were then cut to make two halves of a longer chassis. Two extra axleboxes were cut out from one of the off-cut chassis pieces. One roof with glazing was used whole, the other roof was cut to provide the extra piece. Three compartment dividers were shaped from plasticard and glued into place with care not to get glue on the window-part of the glazing. After a coat of paint on the sides, the body was assembled and glued together taking care not to get glue on the windows. I've used both poly-cement and Bostick Clear adhesive depending on the plastic. The chassis halves were trimmed to fit and cemented onto the body. The center axle was carefully spliced into the running boards. Effectively the coach is really a 4 wheeler! I've used a slightly undersized set of wheels for the center axle, locked in place and with the bottom of the flanges removed. Behind the running boards, no-one will notice the center wheels are not turning. A check was made that all was square and true before allowing the glue to set. The roof needed a little plastic putty and sanding to make the joint disappear and the old rainstrips were filed off and new ones made out of microstrip. The coach was then finished with painting and crests applied by transfers. A train of 6 wheelers with a 4 wheel brake at the rear, headed by my venerable Metro Tank - a Wills Finecast kit on a Perseverance chassis with Romford drivers.

Think I will have to try and hunt down some of these carriages and have a go at this project. Wonder if I can have a working center axle and what effect it would have on the carriage?

The best way would be to use a Cleminson Truck but to get the room required would probably need a completely custom built chassis www.brassmasters.co.uk/cleminson_underframe.htmThe easiest way might be to use the chassis from a Hornby 6W "Palethorpes" wagon - The downside of this being that you now have to chop three vehicles up to make just one coach. There is, however, a lot of off-cut from the coach bodies so it is possible to save if your making several. And good luck if you want to fit running boards!

I could well be asking lots of questions about doing it after my next holiday. I am going to the Great Electric Train Show next year.
