Layout started 2 years ago, it's an odd concept but it's mine. The layout depicts the world of a mega rich railway mad owner of a disused quarry who would like the public to see and enjoy what he has created, which is a 3 track railway with sidings a vistor center, aircraft museum etc, all the fun of the fair as it were.
First few months spent planning and researching. Then the base board build to accomodate the 3 main tracks in a folded figure of 8 which is about 10 by 17 feet with a area in the middle for control.
Track bed, I love to experiment, so the incline(grade) was made with expanded foam board topped with sheet steel(this is to attract the magnets fitted under the locomotive for traction). all other track was bedded on expanded foam flooring underlay, this can be melted quickly either side of the track to form a raised bed. Peco code 100 track was then used(I know it's not quite right for scale but I like it).
The last few months have been spent installing servo point motors and making a mimic pannel, finnished this last week.
I forgot to mention, along the way I got some locomotives, rolling stock, a DCC system, Airfix 1/72 scale models, track side buildings of the card type, made a turntable and built a work station and spray shop for repairs and alterations.
When I was 7 years old I got for Christmas a train set, I missed that set until I started this layout.

A very interesting layout. How well do the magnets improve traction and what effect does it have on motor life?

Traction is improved, it's a bit like adding lead to a loco but only when you need it. I have not lost any motors yet but would suspect it may have an effect. I will keep this upto date as increased running time will show any motor wear.

I will look forward to hearing how it works out.
