As I need 'stuff' to finish off my Staniers and A1A,I thought that I would seek out my old tender drive Hornby Patriot (the un-rebuilt type)and see if I could fit a Backmann Jubilee chassis into the body of this loco......Why? OK, I'm bored,(biding my time till the new 'floating floor' is laid, for that, I need to empty most of the house into the newly cleared half of my garage!!) I probably saw something about the Patriot Class on the internet and thought,""'HMM"""' I should purchase the new Backmann version of this class, but wait!!...that's when I remembered mine and also a 'spare' Jubilee loco and tender (bought it at the Warley show in 2009,thinking it was the 'newest' version, I was wrong, it was just an updated Ex Mainline one, I wondered why it was 'Cheap!!) Anyway,if you have one of these locos, they are crap, the boiler is way the wrong shape and it makes them look 'humphy backett' (Scot) and deformed to boot!!.... Backmanns New Jubilee on the other hand is superb!! OK, we've got the two locos,I removed the chassis from both locos and of course one does not fit directly into the other. The Hornby Chassis is a pretty free runner,so it's set aside for 'other things' The 'Jube' body will probably be 'cannonbolised' for the sake of 'others!!...?' Right, to get the Backmann chassis into the 'shell' of the Patriot required one thing and one thing only, craft knives! So after scraping my way through two Star Treks, CSI Los Angeles, Hawai 5-0 I had scraped enough plastic out for the new chassis to be a 'tight fit', so snug infact,it will require no securing method,ie, screws!! Next I will turn my attention to the motorised overwidth 'Fowler' tender, it will require more serious surgery, methinks I'll have to cut the ends off leaving the sides and using the 'Jube's' tender chassis build it up from there, hopefully, I'll be able to re-use the ends if I get good cuts when these are cut (from the tender), otherwise, I'll scratch build new ends from 'Plasticard' So there you go, more to do to keep me hand in.....Dave P/S, I have an old Lima 'Crab' ( dead if I remember right) it has a Fowler tender as well, I'm wondering if it's as wide as the Hornby one.....but where is it???

OK, I decided against 'scratch building' or altering a tender, too much like hard work, bored or not! Story one,I found a 2nd hand one on Ebay, put in my 'max bid' of 15.50 British Pounds, but was outbid at the last breath..funny that?? It went for 15.60!!,then there was postage,so if I did win at my 'max' bid I would have been up for almost 23 quid! Anyhoo,I was'nt bothered,it was an old version,no rivet detail, maroon with LMS on it,back to 'thinking' and building that 'scratch' one, or sliced up version!! Story two, time has passed, and I was on a site where folks were praising the 'Hornby' and 'Backmann' service centres, and thought,""HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM"",it wert long thought...".Harr". Oy finds the B'mann web site, ar, put in me details, and requested "a new 'Fowler' tender for 'Baroda' Jubilee Class....and that was Monday AM, Monday night I had 'verification' of my order, yesterday afternoon I was requested to pay 23 British Pounds 'inclusive' by 'Pay Pal'. I did that right away, and this morning at 0515 hours I checked my Email, and it's been posted!! So that's service for ya,and it's a 'brand new' one the same as per my own model of Baroda, and this one I can tell you pisses all over the Ebay one...there's another good reason to give EBay the 'heave ho',if you want something,go to the 'source'...thank you Backmann!!........Dave

I only use ebay now as a last resort, especially if I want something rare or out of stock else where, the asking price is the main deterrent nowadays.....the postage is extortion........Phil

I think some of the sellers just 'guess' the postage value Phil, you can find out exactly what it cost (usually) by checking the parcel when you receive it, it will either be on the delivery slip,or you just count the stamp value! It's an easy way that's open to the seller to get more 'profit' out of the sale, but the 'extra' cost will be claimed against packing and handling no doubt!! I'm under the same opinion now as yourself Phil, if it's something that cannot be sourced by any means, Ebay is an option that will remain 'open',but at the same time,if I know that it's a Rip-Off...forget it!!...........Dave

Yes "packing and handling" what a nice little earner (ripoff), they must charge for each time they pick the bloody thing up, it seems to be a nasty little thing that is slowly making it's way into the Ebay system.
I don't know of any retailer, as yet, who charges in the same way, item price + packing and handling + postage = pocket pain.........Phil

Got my 'spare tender' yesterday from Backmann,I thought 'great service',well, that went right oot the windy!! It was the correct one, good start, but there was no wee packet of the important 'detailing parts',like ,the brake rod,the water scoop, the vacuum pipe, but most importantly, "da ra" the main feature of the 'Fowler' tender......the coal rails, and support for the locomotive tools,ie, fire irons etc.(thits fits accross the middle of the tender, between the coal rails) There was also a hand rail missing and one of the two 'vents' on the tender (up by the water filler) had been fitted incorrectly, it was glued in probably 1 scale foot higher than the other!!, "sho ah woz not too amused Mish Moneypenny" Anyhoo, I can fix the vent,I can add a handrail, the others,"naw",so I promptly sent them an Email, lets see how the service dept deal with that,"umpa umpa stick it up yer jumpa" I am the Walrus.... coo coo ca joob............Dave
