BAe Lightning F6.
Mach 2.2 Interceptor.
Lightning XS925, from the last batch built by BAe. In the markings of number 11 Squadron worn when struck off charge at RAF Binbrook.
Powered by 2 Rolls Royce Avon 301R engines.
Displaying the over wing auxiliary tanks fitted to increase range when on long flights such as transfers to overseas bases. The Lightning had a notoriously short endurance of approximately 20 minutes without refuelling. The installation of the most powerful model of the RR Avon improved performance at the expense of endurance.
Armed with 2 Red Top air to air missiles. Two 30mm Aden cannon in forward compartment of belly fuel tank.

Pictured is an RAF Tornado GR4 taking on fuel from a Voyager aircraft.
The Tornado GR4 is a two-seat, all-weather, day/night attack and reconnaissance aircraft. It has been in service with the RAF for more than 30 years, but a combination of major upgrade programmes and numerous continual enhancements has kept the aircraft amongst the forefront of all attack aircraft.
Still one of the very few aircraft in the world that is able to operate at low level, day or night and in poor weather, the Tornado is now equipped with a modern precision-guided weapons suite and world-class reconnaissance sensors such as the Reconnaissance Airborne Pod for Tornado (RAPTOR).
The aircraft also carries the Litening III Advanced Targeting Pod, which is used in both attack and reconnaissance roles.
The RAF has had Tornados deployed to the Middle East region for more than 20 years – further proof of the versatility and capability of this exceptional aircraft.
The aircraft were operating as part of 903 Expeditionary Air Wing in 2017.
I noted that the design of the IFR probe mechanism is almost identical to that designed for the TSR2.
Tornados are due for retirement starting from this year hence I have posted in 'Historic aircraft' rather than Modern.
