I will be replacing my demented dalek, the more I look at the supplied one, the less I like it, I hope it's not going to be the standard for future pieces of deck furniture......Phil

Hi Phil, I think the standard has already been set. Here is the list (so far) of pieces i am not using, but instead making myself; Ladder forward scuttle, gun carriages, anchors, rings for hatch battens, capstan, swivel guns, side window badges. Cheers Steve

Makes you wonder then if it's worth doing anymore, so may parts appear to be knackered....might cancell my subscription??.....Dave

Well yes, when you take that into consideration Steve, it's a lot from a kit to replace due to inaccurate parts and poor quality.
I received more issues today, haven't looked at them yet, but that's about half way I think, sooo.......I won't cancel......come this far I may as well complete it.
But, I'll think very hard on whether to enter into another partwork series, the Bismarck was, in my opinion quite good, but the Endeavour trails a long way behind...........Phil

Don't get me wrong Dave and Phil, I am being very fussy about this model. I still think you will have a pretty reasonable model if you use the parts supplied. But I have said right from the start that I want to build a truly accurate model, that looks more like an admiralty model or something you would see in a museum rather just a model from a kit.

I can understand what you want to do Steve, and on the evidence so far, I'm sure you'll achieve your goal with ease, she's brilliant.
But I've been disappointed from really early on (most of my concerns were voiced on the other site that crashed) but I kept at it because I had hoped it would get better. I've built many ships over the years, in wood, plastic and resin and I've come to expect a certain amount of quality, I suppose I could be viewed as "fussy" on that score, but I know one thing, when I'm done, she'll be a very fine ship......Phil

Hi Bob I screwed the disc of wood onto a Dremel mandrel and used the Dremel like a lathe - whilst it was spinning I used a file to make the contour. Take a look at the photo of the Dremel on page 5. Steve

Nice work on the capstain. With your photo's it looks straight forward enough to do , but I have a question .? What diameter is the dowel up the middle.? I would like to copy what you have done. You have certainly set the standard Steve.

G'day again, read through all your posts- I agree with you on the main hatchway. After reading the AOTS book -Which says there is no definative answer, then goes on to say that it probably was solid timber , not a grate- I boldly disagreed with their conclusion as it didnt fit with a ship in the tropics.I believe that practicality was on the side of a grate. Now having seen what you have done it appears obvious that both would have been possable as they are interchangeable. Now I need to build both.

Hi Tony, Yeah the hatch is open for interpretation alright, there's a lot of guesswork and mistakes with regard to some of the finer details of the Endeavour. The AOTS points out some prior mistakes made, but is also guilty of some itself, and the author even admits a lot of his detail is best guess based on the practice of the time so we cant take anything as gospel. The Endeavour replica has a grating over the main hatch, but I have seen models of other ships from that era that have the battens on the hatches. Yeah I agree with you and think they would have changed according to the weather. Either way looks better than the way the instructions say and those over sized rings.
Oh yeah the capstan, the shaft is 5mm dowel, the head is 17 mm diameter.
I thought I was fussy, but I came across a photo diary of a guy in Poland scratch building the Endeavour, about the same scale as this one (1:50), his detail is incredible especially the ships boats. Check it out at boatmodelling.com

Thanks Shipaholic , I'll have a crack at the capstain with that info it should be do-able. I will copy your resized rings on the main hatch to as it looks so much better( copying is the best form of flattery ;D) I have some work to do as I'm still making the Great cabin fittings and have to plank the hull as well. I'll check out that scratchbuild too .... A bit more than I could cope with I think. Tony
